Giro d’Italia Camp

Contador on Zoncolan

REGISTRATION CLOSED FOR 2012

The Giro d’Italia is beautiful, chaotic, passionate, demanding, and quite possibly the best bicycle race in the world. There’s nothing like being there in person to feel and experience the sensation yourself. Velo Veneto puts you in the midst of the action, not only at the race itself, but also in the daily life that gives rise to this great race.

We’re quite excited to share this great opportunity to mix fantastic riding and a taste of the Giro d’Italia experience with you. This trip will take in vineyard-covered hills, the Dolomite mountains, and a visit to the Giro d’Italia. You’ll leave with a taste of top-level pro racing and some good, hard, beautiful miles in your legs. Oh, and along the way, we’ll sample the best of Italian cuisine and wines.

To be fair, this trip isn’t for everyone. As always, our focus is on providing you with the best riding anywhere in the world. We won’t see every stage, nor will we spend the days we do hopping from point to point along the route. Our itinerary will visit 3 stages, while providing you the opportunity to do a real ride every day, and sample the best of Italian cuisine and wines. So if you’re up for as much, if not more, riding than spectating, then this is the trip for you!

Our 2012 Giro d’Italia Camp detailed itinerary*:

    Passo Giau Descent

  • May 19 – Saturday: Arrival, shakedown ride, and welcome dinner!
  • May 20 – Sunday: With over 30 local rides, we have plenty of roads to choose from. After our ride, we’ll sit down to a big, traditional lunch, followed by a few hours of watching the Giro hit the mountains.
  • May 21 – Monday: With the weekend over, and traffic gone, today will be a good day to climb our own Dolomiti mountain, the 5,800ft Monte Grappa. With today being a rest day at the Giro, our afternoon will be free to explore one of the area’s many historical sights.
  • May 22 – Tuesday: The Sella Ronda, a Dolomites loop with 4 passes, is a traditional Velo Veneto ride and a great introduction to the Dolomites. We’ll ride the loop in the morning and then settle into our hotel and watch the Giro on TV.
  • May 23 – Wednesday: Waking up at our alpine mountain hotel in the Dolomites, we’ll roll through the mountains before heading up the Passo Giau, where today’s stage of the Giro will come to us. We’ll return to our home in Castelcucco this evening.
  • Giro Summit Party

  • May 24 – Thursday: Back at home, we’ll have many choices for our ride today, including the local Prosecco vineyards. After lunch, we’ll head a few kilometers away to see a likely bunch sprint finish of the Giro’s stage 18.
  • May 25 – Friday: Today’s ride will take us north, around the Monte Grappa to the Passo Manghen, which you will have a chance to ride just ahead of the Giro itself! After watching the Pros pass, we’ll head back to watch the finale of this pivotal stage on TV.
  • May 26 – Saturday: Though your trip was short, you’ll leave with many miles/kilometers in your legs, a few souvenirs in your bag, and memories to last a lifetime.
